Driving ambulance estates strategy

LOCATION: YORKSHIRE   |   PROJECT AREA: STRATEGIC ADVISORY SERVICES   |   PROJECT STATUS: COMPLETED

Yorkshire Ambulance Service covers 6,000 miles of terrain, serves a population of over 5 million people, and has 109 properties. Having a comprehensive, but comprehensible, plan for their estate is vital for them.

That’s why they turned to Community Ventures to provide a full estates strategy for them.

The Solution

The Community Ventures team have experts in many elements of the NHS, with team members who have directed estates strategy for primary care, secondary care and ambulance services. The team first compiled existing estates documents that Yorkshire Ambulance Service already had, combining them with new work to produce a complete strategy.

They wanted to build on the Hub and Spoke programme, giving a clear direction of where the Service wanted to go with its estates development so that the strategy can be used to support a number of upcoming estates-related business cases.

The Result

The final estates strategy for Yorkshire Ambulance Service was completed on time and on budget, with elements that can complement and flex to fit the emerging Trust strategy.

The strategy is based around a number of themes, including improvement of the retained estate, development of integrated contact centres, collaboration and co-location with partners and ensuring the estate helps the delivery of the fleet strategy. It also ensures that environmental issues are at the heart of everything the Ambulance Service does.

A comprehensive strategy

The strategy was comprehensive, but a condensed, graphics-heavy summarised version was also created to use alongside the main strategy. The summary report can be shared with staff so that they can understand the future plan without having to read pages of technical information, and can also be used to support discussions with stakeholders and funding applications.

The strategy looks at both shorter-term operational and longer-term transformational opportunities for the service, which will help support them to deliver key results such as improved response times, better patient outcomes, and enhanced staff wellbeing.

Yorkshire Ambulance Service can now be sure that the future plans for its estate are robust and well-evidenced, and can move forward with confidence to act on their ambitious property plans.

"Community Ventures have not only shown an excellent understanding of the strengths of the service, but also the challenges the ambulance sector faces and how the service aligns with the wider system challenges across the NHS."
